Inner city garden

The renovated 1830's cottage is reputedly the first house in Hobart to be owned by a woman. Its rich history includes a photograph of a group of people standing on the front garden holding Darwin's monkey!

It is a steeply sloping site and the back garden was designed and built first, being terraced into a series of small spaces using locally sourced sandstone.

Stone walls were also built in the front garden to reduce the severity of the drop into the garden. The garden is entered via the original stone steps under a arch of snow pears, which help to create a private courtyard at the house entry.

Planting is a slightly contemporary take on the 'cottage garden' theme, appropriate to the history of the site but also to a modern lifestyle.
